Exploring Ubud Indian Restaurants As a Total Newbie, No Regrets Here!

Indian culinary

Ubud, Bali is basically heaven for anyone who loves culture and good food. Unlike Kuta or Seminyak that are known for their stunning beaches, Ubud’s charm leans more into rice terraces, temples, and a slower pace of life. You can spend days wandering art markets, yoga studios, and quiet forest trails here. But beyond all that, the food scene is just as exciting. Honestly, one of my most memorable moments in Ubud happened at a random Ubud Indian restaurant I stumbled into.

A Surprise Find on Jalan Sukma

Long story short, after spending the morning exploring Ubud Palace, I decided to wander through the streets around the town center. One of the roads I ended up walking along was Jalan Sukma, just about a five-minute ride east of the palace.

The area felt calmer than the main streets, lined with small cafés, local shops, yoga studios, and guesthouses. I was simply enjoying the atmosphere and looking for a nice place to take a break when a modest Ubud Indian restaurant caught my attention. A simple sign reading “Chai of the Tiger, Indian Fusion” was enough to make me stop and take a second look.

The funny thing was, I had been curious about Indian food for quite some time. I kept seeing it in food magazines, blogs, and cooking shows like MasterChef. Everyone described it as rich in spices yet surprisingly well balanced. But somehow, I had never actually tried it. Standing in front of that small Ubud Indian restaurant, I finally thought, “Why not?” Without overthinking it, I walked inside.

First Impressions That Felt Surprisingly Warm

Walking into the restaurant, I immediately realized it was very different from what I had imagined. The place was small and simple, yet it felt warm and surprisingly comfortable.

Instead of a quiet dining room, I found a lively space where travelers from different countries were chatting as if they had known each other for years. A few guests were gathered around a board game provided by the café, laughing and enjoying the moment together.

It did not feel like an Ubud Indian restaurant where people came to eat. It felt more like a community hub where good food naturally brought people together.

My First Taste of Indian Food

As someone with zero clue about Indian food, I had no idea what to order. Every name on the menu sounded completely unfamiliar. Luckily, the waiter was patient enough to recommend Butter Chicken and Pani Puri, and I just went along with it.

The moment I took my first bite, I finally understood why people describe Indian food as rich yet balanced. The Butter Chicken was creamy with warm spices, while the Pani Puri hit with a burst of tangy, spicy freshness. Every bite felt intentional, not thrown together.

That was it, I was hooked. This Ubud Indian restaurant is definitely making my list if I ever come back. If you’re curious too, Chai of the Tiger sits at Jl. Sukma Kesuma No.25, Ubud, Bali. You can easily spot its sign and the lively atmosphere you can already sense from the street.

How about you? Do you also have experience trying Indian food?
